PROGRAM NOTES
The first movement features vaulting melodic lines that obscure any sense of the beat. Uncertainty and change become constant. The second movement is centered around a fascination with pizzicato. With all three voices playing pizzicato, the result has a playful and tranquil quality. The third movement, played attaca, is marked by the reintroduction of Cello I playing arco. 

Each movement has its own unique atmosphere, which is linked together by the smallest fragment of what is one of the most powerful and simplest musical gesture: ♩♫♩♫ . At first, this gesture seems to have little significance until it becomes the only thing you can hear in select moments in each of the movements.
